But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can't prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory. The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king's army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince's guard. A lush and gorgeously written debut, packed with action, intrigue, and heart-racing romance.Īlexa Hollen is a fighter. ![]() ![]() ![]() I actually went back through the book and re-read specifically to try and find something that would legitimise this twist and came up dry, though I did find quite a bit of behaviour which makes this twist even more inconsistent. Kinda like Hannibal Lector meets IKEA.Īnyway, was anyone else utterly unconvinced by this plot twist? It seemed massively inconsistent with the previous behaviour “Cheradenine” had displayed. At the end of Use Of Weapons, we find out that the dude we thought was Cheradenine Zakalwe is actually Elethomel the Chairmaker, the step brother of Cheradenine who’s hobbies include slaughtering members of his adopted family and fashioning their carcasses into bits of furniture. ![]() Right, so I mentioned this in another thread but the more I think about it the more it’s annoying me. ![]() ![]() ![]() Wanderers: A Novel by Chuck Wendig KINDLE PDF EBOOK EPUB. Pressurized air within the complex prevents contamination by radioactive fallout or biological weapons. Now officially called the Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center, the facility is entered through massive steel blast doors that are three feet thick and weigh twenty tons each. The four-and-a-half-acre underground complex was designed to survive a direct hit by a ten-kiloton atomic bomb. Fifteen buildings, most of them three stories high, were erected amid a maze of tunnels and passageways extending for miles. The mountain was hollowed out, and about 700,000 tons of rock were removed. Cheyenne Mountain was chosen as the site for a top-secret underground combat-operations center. ![]() In the mid-1950s, high-level officials at the Pentagon worried that America’s air defenses were vulnerable to sabotage and attack. ![]() ![]() One of the nation’s most important military installations is located deep within it, housing operational units of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, the United States Space Command and the Air Force Space Command. And yet Cheyenne Mountain is hardly pristine. From a distance, the mountain looks beautiful and serene, dotted with rocky outcroppings, scrub oak and ponderosa pine. Cheyenne Mountain sits on the eastern slope of Colorado’s front range, rising steeply from the prairie and overlooking the city of Colorado Springs. ![]() ![]() Ramona Surprised Cleary By Sticking Around Ramona couldn’t pronounce her real name, Beatrice, so now everyone called her Beezus.Īs for the little sister’s name, Cleary overheard a neighbor outside calling to someone named Ramona and promptly put the name in the book. When she went to add a female friend for Henry, she included a little sister to explain Beezus’s nickname. Cleary tossed Ramona into the book because she realized none of her characters had siblings. Ramona Was An Accidental Characterīeezus and Ramona appeared as minor characters in Cleary’s first novel, Henry Huggins (1950). While her older sister Beezus calls her a “pest,” Ramona’s imaginative and lively nature is why readers still love her all these years later. ![]() ![]() Ramona Quimby-the protagonist of Beverly Cleary’s popular series of children's novels-has a knack for getting into trouble, whether it’s dropping out of kindergarten, squeezing a tube of toothpaste down a sink, or cracking a hard-boiled egg on her head to show off (only to find her mom forgot to boil it). ![]() ![]() ![]() While I am not the most science jargon savy person, I never once felt lost with the discussions in the book, and was surprised to see Logan's thoughts aligned with my own from the interpersonal level of humanity. By the end of the book, I was in tears from his personal growth. When his world gets turned upside down from a raid gone wrong, he works through it the only way he knows how-not repeating history. Blake did his due diligence when researching for this book, and again within the text as Logan ponders out that big question, "Is it possible to save humanity from itself?"įrom his person life, to his professional, Logan is doing his best to make up for the black mark on his name. Every detail of this story felt like a future that is one of the many possibilities for us. I am in awe at the profound themes, and in no way saw the depth coming from the blurb. The way it tells a near future story, while dropping bigger picture ideas for the reader to ponder on is masterful. ![]() I am going to do my best to review this book without spoilers, but the TL DR of it is, even if "near future - scifi" isn't in your normal reads, I highly recommend this book. I already know this book is going to be one of my top reads for 2022, and it's only February. WOW, what in the 'relevant to our current state of humanity' did I just read?! ![]() ![]() ![]() Play icon The triangle icon that indicates to play Reyes’ novel, then, immediately caught my attention. Even though I wore the uniform just like everyone else, I felt immensely out of place, because in those years, I realized I identified as bisexual. On the days we attended mass, which took place in the school’s gym, we had to wear a thicker, more formal skirt and a burgundy blazer. ![]() Like Yamilet, I attended a Catholic high school (mine was all-girls while hers is co-ed) where we were required to wear a uniform. ![]() Growing up, I didn’t know any stories about queer girls, especially Brown girls. The young adult novel weaves a story of teenage romance with discussions around first-generation pressures, migration, mental health, and growing pains. Sonora Reyes’ The Lesbiana’s Guide to Catholic School follows Yamilet’s struggles to keep her queerness under wraps, especially when she meets her new crush, a girl named Bo who isn’t afraid to wear rainbow attire and speak out against homophobic teachers. Hoping to start over, she decides to play the role of a super-straight girl in her new environment: a Catholic high school. When 16-year-old Yamilet came out, she lost her best friend and entire social circle. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Will the unicorns welcome all and continue their fun in all its glittery glory? The bulk of the paper provides a detailed summary and critique of every single articulated Canadian position I encountered against such PC measures as fair language policies. I begin by examining three factors which enable the term ‘political correctness’ (hereafter PC) itself to feed into the hands of its opponents: namely, the trivialization of the actual issues which are attributed to PC, the villainization of those involved in the PC movement, and the conferring of a sense of legitimacy on the opposition movement. ![]() |
